species A group of organisms that can mate to produce fertile offspring.
evolution The process by which the inherited traits of a population change over generations.
fossil The preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past.
adaptation An inherited trait that increases an organism's chance of survival and reproduction in its environment.
scientific theory A well-supported explanation of some aspect of the natural world based on a body of facts and repeated testing.
natural selection The process where organisms with traits better suited to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully.
competition The struggle between organisms for limited resources like food, water, or territory.
sexual selection A form of natural selection where individuals with certain inherited traits are more likely to obtain mates.
coevolution : Two or more species evolving in response to changes in each other over time.
fossil record The total collection of all discovered fossils, showing how life has changed over time.
embryo An organism in its earliest stage of development before birth or hatching.
homologus structures Body parts in different species that have a similar internal bone structure, indicating a common ancestor.
extinct A term used to describe a species that no longer has any living members.
vestigial organs Body parts that have lost their original function through the process of evolution.
molecular clock A technique that uses the mutation rate of DNA to estimate the time when two species diverged from a common ancestor.
relative dating Determining the age of a fossil or rock layer by comparing it to the positions of others
absolute dating Determining the specific age of a fossil or rock in years, often through radioactive testing.
