Stage 3 deepest stage of sleep, regular delta waves indicate a person is in state of oblivion, night terrors/sleepwalking, don't remember anything, 30 minutes first cycle, 10 minutes last cycle, 1-1.5 hrs per night
REM (paradox) muscles are paralyzed, eyes move rapidly, pulse rate increases, vivid and lengthy dreams, breathing becomes irregular, brain is active.
Electroencephalograph (EEG) used to record electrical activity of the brain
Quiet Sleep Stages 1,2,3, your brain is getting less active
Active Sleep REM is this sleep, your brain is getting more active.
Dreams mental activity during sleep
Freud he said “dreams are the royal road to the unconscious mind”. Dreams are full of hidden meanings, others believed they had no purpose
Newborns 16-18 Hours → 50% REM
16-18 years old 9-11 hours
Young adult (grad school age) 8 hours
Average adult 6-8 hours → 25% REM
Sleep Cycle 1-2-3-2-1-REM=90min
