| calluses | rough patches of skin - usually from a blister hardening on the skin. |
| tangible | something that can be touched or felt. |
| treason | the crime of betraying one’s country |
| obliged | used to thank someone and say that you are grateful |
| drudgery | jobs and tasks which are boring or unpleasant but which must be done. |
| reputation | the way you are viewed by others and by your community and the way these people think about you |
| incredulous | not wanting or not able to believe something, and usually showing this. |

| significance | importance; special meaning |
| mockery | behavior or speech that makes fun of someone or something in a hurtful way. |
| scoffed | to speak about someone or something in a way which shows that you have no respect for that person or thing. |
| endure | to go on; continue; suffer through something |
| cavalier | supporter of the king in the English Civil War in the 1640s; a gallant or chivalrous man; a gentleman |
| insubordination | defying authority (not listening to direct orders from authority. |
