| meter | the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllbales that creates a poem's rhythm |
| poetic foot | a specific pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables |
| stressed syllable | the syllable of a word or phrase that is emphasized when you say it aloud |
| unstressed syllable | the syllable of a word or phrase that is not emphasized when you say it aloud |
| iamb (pronounced "Eye-am") | a two-syllable poetic foot with an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable (da-DUM) |
| pentameter | a poem with five poetic feet in each line |
| iambic pentameter | a line of poetry made up of five lambs for a total 10 syllables in this rhythm: da DUM da DUM da DUM |
| rhyme scheme | the pattern of rhymes at the ends of lines in a peom, usually shown with letters (like ABAB AABB) |
| stanza | a group of related lines in a poem, sometimes separated by space in between |
| quatrain | a stanza of four lines in a poem |
| couplet | a stanza made up of two lines, often ending in rhyming words |
| volta | a shift or turn in the mood, tone, argument, or direction of a poem |
| theme | the main idea or message of a poem |
| line | a single of words in poem |
