Rocks study

TermDefinition
How do Metamorphic rocks form Changed by extreme heat and pressure deep inside the earth
What does the word Metamorphic mean Change of form
How do Metamorphic rocks start of as These rocks start out as igneous, sedimentary, or even or even other metamorphic rocks ( called the parent rock)
What are the two primary ways that rocks undergo a change Contact Metamorphic and Regional Metamorphic
What are the rock textures of Metamorphic rocks Foliated and Non foliated
What is foliated The extreme pressure causes the minerals to line up in flat layers or bands
What is non-foliated The minerals are squeeze together, but they do not form layers or bands
What is an example of foliated Gneiss and Slate
What is example of non-foliated Marble and Quartzite
Every metamorphic rock comes from a Preexisting rock
How do Sedimentary rocks form Through specific step by step processes that takes thousands or millions of years
Weathering Rocks are broken down into smaller pieces ( sediment) by wind water or ice
Erosion These sediments are moved from one place to another
Decomposing The sediments are dropped or settle in a new location often at the bottom of a lake or ocean
Compaction Overtime layers of sediment buildup the weight of a top layers squishes the bottom layers together
Cementation Minerals in the water act like glue binding the sediments together into solid rock
Sedimentary goes through the process of what Weathering erosion deposition compaction, and cementation (WEDCC)
What are the tree types of texture, sedimentary rocks Clastic chemical organic
Clastic Made from Brocken pieces (clasts) of other rocks that have been compacted and cemented together
Chemical Formed when water evaporates and leaves behind dissolved minerals that crystallize
Organic Formed from the accumulated remains of once living things like plants or shells
Examples of clastic Sandstone, shale, and conglomerate
Examples of chemical Rock salt (Halite) , Gypsum
Examples of Organic Coal, Fossilferous limestone
What are the types of textures of igneous rocks Intrusive and Extrusive
Intrusive Forms inside the Earth from slowly cooling magma and has large visible crystals
Extrusive Forms outside on the surface from fast cooling lava and has small or no visible crystals

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
