| Capital | money or property, especially when used to make more money |
| depression | a period of poor business and high unemployment |
| division of labor | different people doing different jobs that in the end all combine to finish a complicated task or activity; also called specialization |
| draft animal | an animal used for pulling loads |
| exposition | a public display of agricultural and industrial progress |
| free market | when both the seller and the buyer of an item or a service agree on a fair price without anyone else's influence or control |
| ground water | water beneath the earth's surface |
| immunity | the ability to resist or not be seriously affected by disease |
| inflation | what happens when prices go up and money is worth less |
| layoff | a time large number of workers are fired, often with no warning |
| malnutrition | the results of a poor diet |
| migration | the movement from one place to another |
| poaching | hunting or fishing on another person's land without the right to do so |
| prime minister | the head of the majority party in a parliamentary government |
| proletarian | a worker |
| reformer | a person who wants to change conditions he or she thinks are harmful |
| sanitation | healthy, clean living conditions |
| socialism | a system of government in which the state controls the economy and runs businesses for the benefit of citizens |
| standard of living | all the things that people have that make their lives comfortable - food, clothing, shelter, services and so on |
| strike | to stop working until certain demands are met |
| welfare system | aid given by government agencies to those in need |
