Newtons laws flashcards

QuestionAnswer
What do force arrows show on a diagram? The magnitude (size) and direction of the force
What is the force that acts against a vehicle as it moves forward? air resistance
What is the name of the force that pulls an object towards the centre of a larger mass? gravity
What is newtons first law of motion (inertia)? An object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external resultant force
What is resultant force? the difference between forces, this determines the direction an object will travel and at what force
What is newtons second law of motion? force = mass x acceleration (F=MA)
What is the difference between weight and mass? mass is the amount of matter we are made from, weight is the amount of mass times the gravity of the planet
What is terminal speed? When an object is travelling at its fastest speed possible, it reaches 'terminal speed'
What are the forces like at terminal speed? they are balanced
What are the 5 stages of a skydiver, as he jumps out of a plane until he hits the ground? 1. sky diver accelerates quickly, with little air resistance 2. They then reach terminal speed 3. Parachute then opened, deceleration happens fast 4. They reach a new, slower terminal speed 5. sky diver hits the floor
What is newtons third law of motion? If body A exerts a force on body B, it exerts an equal and opposite force on body A
When a skydiver is in the air, what two forces are acting on them? gravity, air resistance

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
