Volcanoes

TermDefinition
Volcano A structure that forms in Earth's crust when magma reaches Earth's surface.
Magma A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, located underground.
Lava This is what magma is called once it reaches the surface.
Hot Spot An area where lava frequently erupts at the surface
Convergent Boundaries A location where two or more of Earth's tectonic plates move toward each other and collide
Divergent Boundaries A tectonic plates boundary where two plates move apart from each other.
Composite Volcano A tall, cone-shaped mountain formed by ALTERNATING LAYERS of lava, ash and rocks
Stratovolcano This is another name for a Composite Volcano
Dormant Volcano A "sleeping volcano" that poses little threat
