Drugs & Definitions

Antiinfective Agents: substances that act against or destroy infections.
Antibacterial Agents: substances that destroy or suppress the growth or multiplication of bacteria.
Antibiotic Agents: chemical substances produced by microorganisms that have the capacity, in diluted solutions, to destroy or suppress the growth or multiplication of organisms to prevent their action.
Antifungal Agents: substances that destroy or suppress the growth or multiplication of fungi.
Antiviral Agents: substances that destroy or suppress the growth or multiplication of viruses.
Bactericidal: the ability to kill bacteria-- this effect is reversible.
Bacteriostatic: the ability to inhibit or retard the multiplication or growth of bacteria-- this is a reversible process.
Resistance (related to antibiotics): the natural acquired ability of an organism to be immune or to withstand the effects of an antiinfective agent.
Bacteroide Species: a group of anaerobic bacteria that are commonly found in the human gut and play a significant role in digestion and the cut microbiome; part of the normal flora and help break down complex carbohydrates.
Natural Resistance: occurs when an organism has always been resistant to an antimicrobial agent because of the bacteria's normal properties.
Acquired Resistance: occurs when an organism that was previously sensitive to an amicrobial agent becomes resistant.
Generic: penicillin v Brand/Trade: PC PEN VK, PenV Class: Antibacterial Drug Indicated: Bacterial infections; 1st drug of choice for many oral infections (abscess and pericoronitis).
Generic: amoxicillin Brand/Trade: Amoxil, Trimox Class: Antibacterial Drug Indicated for: Bacterial infections; 1st drug of choice for prophylaxis endocarditis; Necrotizing periodontitis; Periodontal abscess.
Generic: amoxicillin/clavulanic acid Brand/Trade: Augmentin Class: Penicillin antibiotic, Beta-lactamase inhibitor Indicated: Bacterial infections; aggressive forms of periodontitis/ Grade C.
Generic: clindamycin Brand/Trade: Cleocin Class: Antibacterial Drug Indicated: Bacterial infections; 1st drug of choice for many oral infections in pt.'s with penicillin allergies.
Generic: nitrofurantoin Brand/Trade: Macrobid Class: Antibacterial Drug Indicated: Bacterial infections
Generic: mupirocin Brand/Trade: Bactroban Class: Antibacterial Drug Indicated: Bacterial infections; 2nd drug of choice Angular cheilitis.
Generic: neomycin/polymyxin/bacitracin Brand/Trade: Neosporin, triple antibiotic ointment Class: Antibacterial Drug Indicated: Bacterial infections.
Generic: erythromycin Brand/Trade: E.E.S. Class: Macrolide Antibacterial Indicated: Bacterial infections.
Generic: clarithromycin Brand/Trade: Biaxin Class: Macrolide Antibacterial Indicated: Bacterial infections; alternate drug if pt. is allergic to amoxicillin for prophylaxis endocarditis.
