nonsteroid hormones (1st messengers) whole proteins- shorter chains of amino acids- bind to receptors on target cell triggering 2nd messengers to affect cells activities
steroid hormones slower than nonsteroid- work according to second messenger system-
primary effects of steroid hormones produced by binding to receptors in target cells nucleus and act on DNA to change cell activities
secondary effects of steroid hormones steroid hormones bind to membrane receptors to rapidly trigger functional changes in target cell
