Properties of water

SOL 6.6

QuestionAnswer
Cohesion The attraction between water molecules that causes them to stick to each other.
Adhesion The attraction between water molecules and other substances (like glass or soil).
Surface Tension A force created by cohesion that makes water act like a “skin” on its surface.
Specific Heat The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a substance.
Heat Capacity The ability of a substance to absorb heat energy.
Evaporation The process of liquid water changing into water vapor (gas).
Condensation The process of water vapor cooling and turning into liquid water
Freezing The change from liquid water to solid (ice).
Melting The change from solid (ice) to liquid water.
Ice (frozen water) Water in solid form that is less dense than liquid water, so it floats.
Universal Solvent Water is called this because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid.
Polarity Water molecules have a slightly positive end and a slightly negative end, allowing many of its unique properties.
Precipitation Any form of water that falls from clouds (rain, snow, sleet, hail).
Weathering The breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces at or near Earth’s surface.
Erosion The movement of weathered materials (sediment) from one place to another.
Physical (Mechanical) Weathering The physical breaking of rocks into smaller pieces without changing their composition.
Chemical Weathering The breakdown of rocks through chemical changes (reactions with water, air, or acids)
Weather The day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere (temperature, precipitation, wind, etc.).
Climate The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time (years or decades).
Humidity The amount of water vapor in the air.
Solar Energy Energy from the Sun that drives weather and climate.
