The Middle Ages/The Dark Ages Time period in European history between the Fall of Rome and the Renaissance - feudalism is popular in Europe.
Roman Catholic Church The branch of Christianity led by the Pope - the world's largest Christian church.
Pope The worldwide leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Excommunication A severe penalty that bans an individual from participating in the church life.
Gothic Architecture A form of European architecture that was very popular during the mid 12th to the 16th century. Showed power & wealth of the church.
Feudalism A dominant social, economic, and political system in medieval Europe characterized by a hierarchical structure.
Manorialism The organizing economic and social system of medieval Europe - defined the relationship between lords and serfs.
Fief Land granted to a vassal by a lord in medieval Europe held in exchange for military service and loyalty.
Vassal A person in medieval Europe who is granted a fief (land) by a lord in exchange for military service, loyalty and other obligations
Lord A nobleman with power, authority, or influence in feudal Europe.
Serfs Farm laborers in the medieval feudal system bound to their lord's manor.
The Crusades A "holy war" by Western European Christians to reclaim the Holy Land (Jerusalem) from Muslim control
The Black Death/The Bubonic Plaque The Black Death was a nickname for the Bubonic Plague, which was a pandemic that killed 30-60% of Europe's population
Islamic Golden Age A period of cultural, economic, and scientific advancement in the history of Islam.
