What was Kristallnacht? The Night of Broken Glass - A Nazi organized riot against the Jews -Happens on the night of Nov 9-10th in 1938
What was life like in the ghettos? -Walled in neighborhoods in cities that held tens of 1,000s -Little food -Lots of disease -Cramped quarters -Lots of death -Eventually they were empty and the people were sent to death camps
What was deportation like/ be able to explain the journey and conditions in the cattle cars. -People were gathered and moved out -15 min to pack and report to train station -80-100 packed/sealed in cattle cars -Cars had little food/ water/ space /no toilet or light -Trip took days -Smelled bad -Screaming/ crying -Hot summer/ cold winter
Explain what life was like in the concentration camps. - used to house the "undesirables" - stayed in barracks -daily roll calls -heard labor -starvation -disease -beatings -hangings -medical experiments -shootings -families separated -humiliating -converted to death camps for final solution
Who were the Kapos? Describe their role, how they treated others, and their privileges. These were selected Jews who were in charge of the other prisoners. They were very harsh.
Who were the Sonderkommandos? Describe their role and how they were chosen. They were the men who had to work in the crematorium. They had to place the bodies in the furnaces. They were chosen because they looked stronger.
What was the symbol of the Nazi party? The swastika
What symbol did Jews wear? They wore the yellow star of David.
Explain what occurred in the initial selection. -This was up on arrival at the camps -Separated by gender -Skilled laborers chosen to work for the Nazis -Luggage was taken and never returned -Families were separated -Old/ Young/ Weak went straight to the gas chamber
Explain what occurred in the daily selection. Camp Doctor- stripped/ examined The doctor chooses who lives/ dies -This can often be random, and the victims go straight to the gas chamber.
Explain the processing process once prisoners entered camps. -Hair was cut off -Disinfection -Given uniform/ shoes (size did not matter) -ID # were tattooed to left forearm
