Plate Movement
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| crust | the outermost, solid, and thinnest layer of the planet, composing less than 1% of its total volume |
| mantle | the thickest, primarily solid rock layer of Earth’s interior, located between the crust and the outer core |
| outer core | a liquid layer of molten iron and nickel, roughly 1,430 miles (2,300 km) thick, located between the mantle and inner core. |
| inner core | The inner core is Earth's innermost, solid geological layer, primarily composed of a dense iron-nickel alloy and located approximately |
| latitude | Latitude is the angular distance of a location north or south of the Earth's equator, measured in degrees |
| longitude | the angular distance (measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds) of a location east or west of the Prime Meridian (0°) in Greenwich, England |
| oceanic ridge | a continuous, 65,000-km (40,000-mile) long underwater mountain range formed by plate tectonics, where divergent plates move apart, allowing magma to rise and create new seafloor |
| sea floor spreading | a geologic process occurring at mid-ocean ridges where tectonic plates diverge, allowing magma from the mantle to rise, cool, and create new oceanic crust. |
| divergent boundry | occurs where two tectonic plates move apart, causing magma to rise from the mantle, solidify, and create new crust |
| convergent boundry | a location where two or more tectonic plates move toward each other and collide |
| transform boundry | a tectonic plate boundary where two plates slide horizontally past one another, neither creating nor destroying lithosphere |
| subduction | the process by which one plate of the lithosphere sinks and slides under another |
| ocean trench | long, deep formation on the ocean floor that developed where two tectonic plates are moving toward each other, and one is moving under the other |
| tectonic plates | a piece of earths crust that according to plates tectonics is pushed by movement in the asthenosphere. |
| lithosphere | the cool solid outer shell of earth it consist of the crust and the rigid uppermost part of the mantle and is broken up into segments or plates. |
| fraction | represents part of a whole, consisting of a numerator (top) and a denominator (bottom) |
| electasity | the flow of electrical charge, primarily driven by the movement of electrons between atoms. |
| stress | the body's natural physical and emotional reaction to challenging changes or demands, |
| strain | a physical injury caused by overstretching or tearing muscles or tendons, often resulting from overuse or improper use. |
| plate boundry | the edges where Earth's tectonic plates meet and interact |
| continental crust | |
