When should drospirenone be avoided? Kidney, liver, or adrenal disease; high potassium risk; history of clotting risk
What mnemonic is used for serious adverse effects of CHCs? Abdominal pain Chest pain Headaches (sudden/severe) Eye problems / vision loss Severe leg pain / swelling "ACHES"
Boxed warning for all CHCs? Do not use if woman >35 years old who smokes
Major contraindication group for CHCs from the chart? History of DVT/PE, stroke, CAD/thrombosis, valvular disease with thrombogenicity, severe/uncontrolled HTN, liver disease, migraine with aura, smoker ≥35
Which HC agent should not be used in migraine with aura? Estrogen
When can patients restart CHC after birth? avoid CHCs for 3 weeks postpartum, or 6 weeks if high VTE risk
Main serious warning with Depo-Provera (mydroxyprogesterone shot)? Loss of bone mineral density with long-term use, boxed warning
When starting COC, how long is backup needed? 7 days, unless starting within 5 days after menses
Define COC and CHC COC: combined oral contraceptive CHC: combined hormonal contraceptive (includes rings, pills, patches)
What does Lo in a contraceptive brand name usually indicate? Lower estrogen dose (e.g., 10–25 mcg EE depending product examples shown)
What does Fe in a contraceptive brand name indicate? Iron/placebo tablets containing iron
What does 24 in a contraceptive brand name indicate? 24 active pills / 4 placebo pills
What does Pro in a contraceptive brand name indicate? Contains a progestin
What does tri in brand names usually suggest? Triphasic formulation (3 different doses of estrogen/progestin)
What do numbers like 1/20 or 1.5/30 often indicate? Amounts of progestin and estrogen in active pills
What is NuvaRing’s generic? Etonogestrel/ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring
What is Xulane’s generic? Norelgestromin/ethinyl estradiol patch
What is Twirla’s generic? Levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol patch
What is Depo-Provera’s generic? Medroxyprogesterone acetate (shot)
What is Plan B One-Step / One-Step generics? Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg
