Rev. Earth's Struct

QuestionAnswer
What makes the hydrosphere different from the biosphere? The biosphere is made up of living things (biotic) while the hydrosphere is made of water which is non living (abiotic).
What is the earth's atmosphere made up of? Gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, and other gases.
HYDROSPHERE All water BOTH fresh water and salt water Found in oceans, glaciers, rivers, lakes, ponds, streams, and puddles Water in the form of ice, liquid, and vapor (abiotic)
GEOSPHERE Includes: All rocks, minerals, sand, dirt, mountains, lava, magma, volcanod, elements on the Periodic Table. (abiotic)
BIOSPHERE Includes: All living things (anything made up of 1 or more cells).
ATMOSPHERE Gases - nitrogen, oxygen, and other gases Clouds Water Vapor Weather (wind)
What is currently thought to be the thickest layers of Earth's interior? The mantle is currently thought to be the thickest layer It is thought to be mostly solid rock with iron & magnesium
What are Earth's layers from the INSIDE to the OUTSIDE? Inner core, outer cores, mantle, crust
What layer is currently thought to be made of liquid metal? the outer core
What layer is the outer core between? the mantle and inner core
Why do most scientist think the inner core is a solid ball of metal? because of the pressure from the layers above it make the inner core compact (dense) keeping it from becoming a liquid
What are the three types of rocks? Sedimentary, Igneous, metamorphic
Processes for Sedimentary rocks Weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction, and cementation
Processes for Igneous rocks Magma or Lava heating and cooling
How can granite, classified as an igneous rock become a limestone, a sedimentary rock? It can be compacted and cemented into sediment from weatered rock
How can shale, classified as a sedimentary rock, change into slate, a metamorphic rock? It can undergo extreme (increased) heat and pressure
Processes for Metamorphic rocks Extreme heat and pressure
How could metamorphic rock turn into an igneous rock? It could melt into lava and cool
How could igneous rock turn into sedimentary rock? It could from weathering and erosion

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
