Plants
Biology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| stem | supporting vascular plant structure that connects roots to leaves |
| leaf | the main organ of photosynthesis and transpiration |
| flower | the reproductive structure of an angiosperm |
| root | vascular plant organ that anchors the plant and allows it to absorb water/nutrients |
| fruit | mature ovary of an angiosperm that aids in seed dispersal |
| dermal tissue | protective outer covering of a plant (epidermis, cuticle), usually waxy to prevent water loss |
| ground tissue | produces and stores sugars, contributes to physical support of plant (usually edible portions- potatoes, squash, asparagus) |
| vascular tissue | specialized tissues that carries water and nutrients |
| cambium | produces vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) and increases the thickness of stems over time |
| xylem | vascular tissue that carries water upward from the roots |
| phloem | vascular tissue that conducts sugars from the leaves down |
| meristem | tissue found at growing roots and shoots and in the cambium, forms new cells |
| stomata | small openings on the underside of a leaf, oxygen and carbon dioxide move through |
| guard cell | control the opening and closing of stomata |
| mosses | a small, flowerless, non-vascular plant, grows in dense green clumps or mats in damp, shaded locations, type of bryophyte |
| ferns | a flowerless plant that reproduces by spores, have a vascular system for the transport of water and nutrients |
| gymnosperm | a flowerless, vascular plant that bears their seeds directly on the scales of cones (naked) |
| angiosperm | flowering, vascular plants, bear their seeds in flowers inside a special layer of tissue that surrounds and protects the seed |
| seed | a plant embryo and its food supply encased in a protective covering |
| sepal | outermost, protective portion of a flower that covers the bud and connects to the stem |
| petals | colorful parts of a flower that attract pollinators |
| stamen | male parts containing a filament and anther |
| carpels | female parts containing style, stigma and ovary (becomes the fruit) |
