Earthquakes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Stress | The force that acts on rock to change its shape or volume |
| Tension | This pulls on Earth's crest, stretching the rock to make it thinner |
| Compression | When rock is squeezed until it bends or breaks |
| Shearing | When rock is being pushed in two opposite directions, to the point that it bends or breaks |
| Fault | A break in the rock of Earth's crust or mantle |
| Earthquake | The shaking & trembling that results from the plate movement |
| Magnitude | A single number that geologists use to assign to an equrthquake based on its size |
| Tsunami | A wave produced by an earthquake or landslide |
| Hanging Wall | The wall whose rock is over the other |
| Reverse Fault | When the hanging wall slides up and over the footwall |
| Ring of Fire | Area around the Pacific Ocean where many of the world's earthquakes occur |
| Ocean Floor Uplift & Landslides | Displacement of water, causing a tsunami |
