Earthquakes

TermDefinition
Stress The force that acts on rock to change its shape or volume
Tension This pulls on Earth's crest, stretching the rock to make it thinner
Compression When rock is squeezed until it bends or breaks
Shearing When rock is being pushed in two opposite directions, to the point that it bends or breaks
Fault A break in the rock of Earth's crust or mantle
Earthquake The shaking & trembling that results from the plate movement
Magnitude A single number that geologists use to assign to an equrthquake based on its size
Tsunami A wave produced by an earthquake or landslide
Hanging Wall The wall whose rock is over the other
Reverse Fault When the hanging wall slides up and over the footwall
Ring of Fire Area around the Pacific Ocean where many of the world's earthquakes occur
Ocean Floor Uplift & Landslides Displacement of water, causing a tsunami
