| Supreme Court | highest court and has a final decision in regards to law |
| veto | a right to reject a proposal or decision |
| impeach | charge of misconduct made against a holder of public office |
| amendment | a change or addition designed to improve a text, or piece of legislation |
| represent | appointed to act or speak for someone in an official capacity |
| government | system by which a nation, state, or community is controlled or regulated |
| public office | Position of authority or service involving a responsibility to the public |
| bill | A draft of a proposed law presented for discussion to become a law |
| checks and balances | System in which the powers of government can check or limit the power of the other branches |
| citizen | Person born in a country or who chooses to become a member of that country |
| election | Process of choosing by voting |
| laws | Rules of action or conduct made by governments |
| rights | Freedoms/protections guaranteed by the US government |
| separation of powers | Three way division of power among the branches of federal government |
| override | When Congress votes to make a bill a law despite the President's veto |
| Popular Sovereignty | Idea that a government is created and ruled by the people |
| President | Leader of a democratic government |
| Prime Minister | Leader of a democratic government |
| King/Queen | Leader of a monarchy |
| Dictator | Leader of a dictatorship |
| Constitution | Document that outlines the rights of the American people and the framework of the government |
| articles | Parts of the Constitution |
| Preamble | Introduction to the Constitution that gives the purpose of government |
| Vice President | President of the Senate and assistant to the President of the US |
| Senate | 100 members; write and vote on laws in the best interest of their state |
| Presidential Cabinet | Group of advisors to the President in order to make decisions for the nation |
| Congress | Group of people who meet in order to make laws |
| House of Representatitves | Members, based on a States population, that write and pass laws in the best interest of the people within their state |
| Bill of Rights | First 10 amendments to the Constitution |
| Legislative Branch | Makes the laws |
| Executive Branch | Enforces the laws |
| Judicial Branch | Interprets the laws |
