| tissue | a group of similar cells that perform a specific function |
| organ | a body structure that is made up of different tissues that work together |
| subsystem | a system within a system |
| circulatory system | body subsystem that transports oxygen, nutrients, and wastes; helps fight infection; and helps regulate body temperature |
| excretory system | body subsystem that helps remove cell wastes |
| digestive system | body subsystem that breaks down food, absorbs nutrients from food, and removes solid food waste |
| respiratory system | body subsystem that brings in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide |
| muscular system | body subsystem that moves blood; moves food; and with the skeleton, allows the body to move |
| nervous system | body subsystem that controls the body's responses to changes inside and outside the body |
