| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Age Structure | the distribution of different age groups (usually split into children, working-age, and elderly) within a population. |
| Carrying Capacity | the maximum population size of a species that an environment can sustain indefinitely, given available resources like food, water, and space |
| Demography | the study of statistics such as births, deaths, income, or the incidence of disease, which illustrate the changing structure of human populations. |
| Demographic Transition | describes the shift from high birth/death rates to low birth/death rates as societies industrialize, resulting in five stages of population growth. |
| Density Dependent Limiting Factor | environmental pressures that restrict population growth based on how crowded or dense the population is |
| Emigration | the act of leaving one's own country to settle permanently in another; moving abroad. |
| Exponentail Growth | a pattern of population increase where the growth rate accelerates over time, occurring when resources are unlimited |
| Immigration | the movement of individuals into a new area, habitat, or population from another location |
| Limiting Factor | any biotic or abiotic element—such as food, space, or temperature—that restricts the size, growth, or distribution of a population within an ecosystem |
| Population Density | the average number of people living in a specific area, usually measured as individuals per square kilometer or square mile |
| Population Distribution | the spatial arrangement and spread of people across a given area, such as a country or the entire world. |
| Logistic Growth | Logistic growth in biology is a model of population growth where the growth rate decreases as the population reaches the environment's carrying capacity (k), resulting in an S-shaped curve |
