Bone Diseases

TermDefinition
Multiple Myeloma Malignant proliferation of plasma cells.
Fibrosarcoma Solitary collagenous tumor seen most often in the diaphysis (metaphysis) of the femur or tibia... progression from inside out.
Osteomyelitis Type of infection in which bacteria secretes toxins that promote bone necrosis.
Osteoporosis Metabolic disease in which the density of bone is reduced but the remaining bone has a normal proportion of minerals to organic content.
Osteomyelitis Symptoms include fevers, inflamed lymph nodes, local pain and swelling... progressing to nausea, muscle spasms, and possibly lesions of the bone
Osteosarcoma Most common osteogenic tumor, frequently found in adolescents and young adults, tumor found in the bone marrow of humerus, femur, or tibia.
Rickets Vitamin D deficiency where epiphyseal cartilage grows at plate but fails to ossify/calcify, the growing bones become deformed and bend under weight bearing.
Chondrosarcoma Affects femur and pelvis, tumor is composed of large masses of hyaline cartilage and fibrous tissue, erodes the bone, enlarges it, and often invades the joint cavity, therefore amputation is often the treatment of choice
Osteochondrosis Family of avascular bone diseases occurring in children, skeletal deformities result from disturbances in the blood supply to the ossification centers of growing bones.
Osteomalacia Metabolic bone diseases characterized by inadequate mineralization of bone.
Osteitis Deformans (Paget's disease) Rapid and disorganized bone remodeling activity, bones are poorly constructed and weakened. Characterized by proliferation of osteoclasts and compensatory increased osteoblastic activity.
Achondroplasia inherited disease involving a disruption in the conversion of cartilage to bone during development.
Gout Type of acute arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the synovial fluid of joints, usually in lower limbs causing pain and swelling
Rheumatoid Arthritis Degeneration of hyaline cartilage
