Notes about 11.2 in anatomy and physiology about the regulation of the heart.

QuestionAnswer
What is the sinoatrial node? A nerve tissue at the right atrium that generates the electrical impulses making the normal heart rhythm and rate
What is the sinoatrial node also called? The natural pacemaker
What is more threatening? Abnormal contraction of the atrium or ventricles? Abnormal contraction of the ventricles
Why is abnormal contraction of ventricles more dangerous than abnormal contraction of atrium? Because that negatively impacts how much oxygen flows to cells as the ventricles push blood out, especially the left ventricle
What part of the nervous system is the heartbeat a part of? The autonomic nervous system
What system can speed up the heart rate? The sympathetic nervous system
What does the sympathetic nervous system control? The fight or flight response
What system can slow down heart rate? The parasympathetic nervous system
What are baroreceptors? Nerves that monitor blood pressure and send feedback to the autonomic nervous system
What is a bundle of His? A nerve that goes into the septum of the heart that then branches out to the left and right sides
What are purkinje fibres? Smaller nerves that branch out from the bundle of His to stimulate the heart rate
What is arrhythmia? Abnormal heartbeat. Can be too fast or too slow, and can be either the ventricle or atria contraction.
What is a normal BPM (Beats per minute)? 60 - 100 BPM
