11.2 Notes
Notes about 11.2 in anatomy and physiology about the regulation of the heart.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the sinoatrial node? | A nerve tissue at the right atrium that generates the electrical impulses making the normal heart rhythm and rate |
| What is the sinoatrial node also called? | The natural pacemaker |
| What is more threatening? Abnormal contraction of the atrium or ventricles? | Abnormal contraction of the ventricles |
| Why is abnormal contraction of ventricles more dangerous than abnormal contraction of atrium? | Because that negatively impacts how much oxygen flows to cells as the ventricles push blood out, especially the left ventricle |
| What part of the nervous system is the heartbeat a part of? | The autonomic nervous system |
| What system can speed up the heart rate? | The sympathetic nervous system |
| What does the sympathetic nervous system control? | The fight or flight response |
| What system can slow down heart rate? | The parasympathetic nervous system |
| What are baroreceptors? | Nerves that monitor blood pressure and send feedback to the autonomic nervous system |
| What is a bundle of His? | A nerve that goes into the septum of the heart that then branches out to the left and right sides |
| What are purkinje fibres? | Smaller nerves that branch out from the bundle of His to stimulate the heart rate |
| What is arrhythmia? | Abnormal heartbeat. Can be too fast or too slow, and can be either the ventricle or atria contraction. |
| What is a normal BPM (Beats per minute)? | 60 - 100 BPM |
