Cruel and Unusual Punishment Punishment prohibited by the Eighth Amendment, often debated in the context of the death penalty.
Miranda Rule The requirement that police inform suspects of their rights before questioning
Exclusionary Rule A legal principle that prevents evidence obtained illegally from being used in court.
14th Amendment Grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. and guarantees equal protection under the law.
Selective Incorporation The process by which the Supreme Court applies parts of the Bill of Rights to the states using the 14th Amendment.
Incorporation Doctrine Legal doctrine that makes certain Bill of Rights protections applicable to the states.
Due Process The right to fair legal procedures, including the right to a lawyer, a fair trial, and an impartial jury.
Patriot Act A law passed after 9/11 that expanded government surveillance powers to combat terrorism.
USA Freedom Act A law that revised the Patriot Act to limit government collection of phone data.
Right to Privacy The concept that individuals have an implied right to personal privacy, derived from various amendments.
