What did the Agricultural Revolution do? Increased food production and pushed people to cities
What did the Industrial Revolution introduce? Factories, machines, mass production
What is neoliberalism? System focused on free markets and less government control
Name 2 key ideas of neoliberalism Deregulation, privatization, lower taxes, less government
What is the “invisible hand”? Self-interest helps benefit society through markets
What is criminology? Study of crime and the justice system
What does conflict theory say about deviance? Powerful groups decide what is deviant
What did Weber say helped create capitalism? Protestant values (hard work, discipline)
What are the two main classes in capitalism? Bourgeoisie (owners) and proletariat (workers)
What is class conflict? Struggle between owners and workers
What is alienation? Workers feel disconnected from their work and themselves
What is surplus value? Profit made from paying workers less than value they produce
What is commodity fetishism? Valuing products without thinking about the labor behind them
What is the labor reserve army? Unemployed people used to keep wages low
What are social determinants of health? Social factors like income, education, environment
How does low SES affect health? Less access to healthcare, healthy food, and clean environments
What is medicalization? Turning social problems into medical issues
What is a major issue with U.S. healthcare? Expensive and unequal access
What is deviance? Breaking social norms
What is social control? Ways society enforces rules
What does functionalism say about deviance? It helps society by setting boundaries
What is labeling theory? Labels affect how people see themselves and act
What is broken windows theory? Environment influences behavior
