Richard III Hunchback, part of the York family, last king to fight in battles with his military, died at the battle of Bosworth
Wars of the Roses House of York vs House of Lancaster- fought civil war to gain the crown, (red rose vs white rose)
The Tudors Henry VII (Henry Tudor) fought on behalf of the Yorks, won, and consolidated the emblems to be one rose, both red and white
Star Chamber Court for nobles, monarchs tortured nobles without fair trials as a way of checking the power of the nobility and keeping monarchs stronger (Created by Henry VII)
Ferdinand and Isabella Catholic monarchs, consolidate Spain by making a unified language, single coinage, promote loyalty through travel, sponsored exploration, and the reconquista (take back land)
Concordat of Bologna Agreement between King Francis (France) and Pope that gave the French monarch control over appointing church officials- Pope had right to confirm appointments and collect revenue
Jean Bodin French Political philosopher, estates general- believed in strong central authority, only absolute sovereignty can keep order
Hugo Grotius Dutch journalist who believed in natural law, gov run by LAWS, not divine right

Louis XIII King of France, led France to 30 Years War, commissioned hunting cabin at Versailles, later a palace, worked with Richelieu to raise absolutist power (lots of wives)
Cardinal Richelieu Louis XIII's chief minister, stron supporter of roman catholicism, attached the Huguenots, reformed army and navy, adcanced royal absolutism
