TermDefinition
agglutination clumping of red blood cells used to make bacteria, viruses, or fungi easily removable from immune system
alveoli tiny air sacs in lungs that allow for gaseous exchange
anemia blood disorder in which blood lacks healthy red blood cells leading to reduced oxygen flow to organs
aneurysm ballooning in a weakened artery wall; rupture leads to severe pain or bleeding
antibodies Y shaped proteins produced by white blood cells that identify and neutralize foreign antigens like viruses
antigens any substance that triggers the immune system to produce antibodies
arteries tubes by which blood is carried from the heart to all parts of the body
atherosclerosis chronic disease in which fatty plaque builds up inside arteries causing them to harden
atrioventricular node located in right atrium; connects electrical system in heart, acts as pacemaker
bradycardia resting heartrate of under 60 bpm
capillaries smallest blood vessels; connect arteries and veins
embolus blood clot, air bubble, or other structure that becomes lodged in a blood vessel and causes an embolism
erythrocytes cells that transport oxygen from lungs to tissue and transport CO2 back
fibrinogen liver-produced protein critical for blood clotting and wound healing
foramen ovale temporary opening in atrial septum of a fetus, allowing oxygenated blood to bypass non functional lungs
hematoma collection of clotted blood outside blood vessels formed by injuries which results in a painful, discolored lump
hematopoiesis process in which blood cells are produced
hemoglobin iron-rich protein red blood cells that carry o2 and co2 to and from lungs; low levels cause anemia
hemophilia genetic disorder in which blood does not clot properly causing prolonged bleeding
hemostasis multi-stage process that stops bleeding in injuries
leukocytes white blood cells that counteract foreign objects
plasma transportation medium for blood cells, nutrients, and waste
platelets colorless blood fragments produced in bone marrow that initiate blood clotting to stop bleeding
pleura thin membrane incasing lungs
pneumothorax a collapsed lung caused by air leaking into the space between the lung and chest wall
polycythemia a blood disorder characterized by an abnormal increase in red blood cells, causing thickened blood, reduced flow, and potential clotting
purkinje fibers muscle cells in the inner ventricular walls of the heart that rapidly propagate electrical impulses, ensuring synchronized ventricular contraction
sinoatrial node a small cluster of specialized cells in the upper right atrium. It initiates electrical impulses that set the normal heart rhythm
tachycardia heart rate exceeding 100 bpm
thrombus blood clot formed in situ within the vascular system of the body and impeding blood flow
veins low pressure blood vessels designed to transport deoxygenated blood and waste products back to the heart
