| dynasty | a line of rulers from the same family |
| feudalism | a system of government in which nobles gave land to lesser nobles to govern in exchange for loyalty and military service |
| hierarchy | a system of organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority |
| loess | soft yellow silt |
| mandate of heaven | the belief in ancient China that the emperor was chosen by the gods to rule |
| monarchy | a form of government in which authority over the people is retained through a ruling family |
| plateau | a large area of elevated land that is relatively flat |
| terrace farming | a method for planting crops in a hilly region by building flat levels into hills |
