| οἱ δὲ Φωκέες ὡς ἐβάλλοντο τοῖσι τοξεύμασι πολλοῖσί τε καὶ πυκνοῖσι, οἴχοντο φεύγοντες ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρεος τὸν κόρυμβον, | And since the Phocians were being struck by many densely-packed arrows, they retreated in flight to the top of the mountain, |
οὗτοι μὲν δὴ ταῦτα ἐφρόνεον, | Feeling certain that they [the Persians] would rush against them at first, and they [the Phocians] had prepared to die. These men were thinking these things on the one hand, |
| But on the other hand the Persians with Epialtes and Hydarnes were paying no regard to the Phocians, but they [the Persians] went down the mountain at speed. |
| τοῖσι δὲ ἐν Θερμοπύλῃσι ἐοῦσι Ἑλλήνων πρῶτον μὲν ὁ μάντις Μεγιστίης ἐσιδὼν ἐς τὰ ἱρὰ ἔφρασε τὸν μέλλοντα ἔσεσθαι ἅμα ἠοῖ σφι θάνατον, | Megistias the prophet, after examining the sacrifices, declared to those of the Greeks who were at Thermopylae that death was going to come for them with dawn, |
οὗτοι μὲν ἔτι νυκτὸς ἐσήμηναν, | And in addition there were also deserters who announced that the Persians had found the route around. These men passed on the news while it was still night, |
| But the third people [to pass on the news] were the day watchmen, who ran down from the heights when the day was already dawning. |
| Then the Greeks were holding a council, and their opinions were divided; some were arguing that they should not leave their position, but others were resisting. |
| After this they separated: some departed and dispersed, each returning to their own cities, but others had prepared to remain there with Leonidas. |
