A-Level Greek

Histories Book 7: 217-218.2

TermDefinition
κατὰ ταύτην δὴ τὴν ἀτραπὸν καὶ οὕτως ἔχουσαν οἱ Πέρσαι, τὸν Ἀσωπὸν διαβάντες, ἐπορεύοντο πᾶσαν τὴν νύκτα, The Persians crossed the Asopus and marched all night along this path, which was just like this,
ἠώς τε δὴ διέφαινε καὶ οἳ ἐγένοντο ἐπ᾽ ἀκρωτηρίῳ τοῦ ὄρεος. having the Oetean mountains on their right and the Trachinian mountains on their left.
And a thousand Phocian hoplites were standing guard at this part of the mountain, as has been shown by me previously, to defend their own country and guard the path.
For the lower pass was being guarded by those whom I have mentioned. And the Phocians voluntarily promised to Leonidas that they would guard the path through the mountain.
ἦν μὲν δὴ νηνεμίη, But they Phocians learnt that they [the Persians] had climbed up as such; for the Persians escaped their notice as they were climbing up the mountain because it was completely covered in oak trees. There was no wind,
But there was a lot of noise from the leaves scattered under their feet (as was to be expected), and the Phocians leapt up and began to put on their armour, and immediately the barbarians arrived.
But then they [the Persians] saw men putting on their armour, they were astonished; for they expected that nobody would appear in opposition to them, but they met with an army.
Then Hydarnes grew afraid that the Phocians were Spartans, and he asked Epialtes what country the army was from, and when he learnt the truth he drew up the Persians for battle.
