| Ξέρξης δέ, ἐπεὶ ἤρεσε τὰ ὑπέσχετο ὁ Ἐπιάλτης κατεργάσεσθαι, αὐτίκα περιχαρὴς γενόμενος ἔπεμπε Ὑδάρνεα καὶ τῶν ἐστρατήγεε Ὑδάρνης· | But Xerxes, since the things which Epialtes promised to accomplish pleased him, he immediately became delighted and he was sending Hydarnes and the men whom Hydarnes was commanding. |
| ὁρμέατο δὲ περὶ λύχνων ἁφὰς ἐκ τοῦ στρατοπέδου. τὴν δὲ ἀτραπὸν ταύτην ἐξεῦρον μὲν οἱ ἐπιχώριοι Μηλιέες, ἐξευρόντες δὲ Θεσσαλοῖσι κατηγήσαντο ἐπὶ Φωκέας, | They had set out from the camp at around the time when the lamps were being lit. And the native Malians discovered this pass, and when they discovered it they led the Thessalians around to Phocis, |
| At the time when the Phocians blocked the pass with a wall to protect themselves from attack. From such an early date, [the path] had been viewed by the Malians as in no way a good thing. |
| ἔχει δὲ ὧδε ἡ ἀτραπὸς αὕτη· ἄρχεται μὲν ἀπὸ τοῦ Ἀσωποῦ ποταμοῦ τοῦ διὰ τῆς διασφάγος ῥέοντος, οὔνομα δὲ τῷ ὄρεϊ τούτῳ καὶ τῇ ἀτραπῷ τὠυτὸ κεῖται, Ἀνόπαια· | This path is like this; it starts from the river Asopus which flows through the gorge, and this mountain and the path have the same name, Anopaea. |
| τείνει δὲ ἡ Ἀνόπαια αὕτη κατὰ ῥάχιν τοῦ ὄρεος, λήγει δὲ κατά τε Ἀλπηνὸν πόλιν, | And this Anopaea stretches across the ridge of the mountain and ends at the settlement of Alpenus, |
| Which is the first of the Locrian towns [when coming] from Malian territory, by the rock which is called Melampygos [Black-buttock] and by the abode of the Cercopes, where it is the most narrow place. |
