What does it mean to say God is providential? God is directly involved in guiding and caring for creation.
Why do the Pharisees emerge after the destruction of the second Jerusalem Temple in AD 70 with their religious ways intact? They focused more on the study of the Torah than on rituals observed at the temples (sacrifices)
What is the Diaspora? The situation of Jews living away from their ancestral homeland, which has been true for most since the classical period.

When did the Holocaust occur? What does the Hebrew term Shoah mean? The Holocaust occurred between 1933 and 1945, Shoah means mass destruction.
Briefly describe Reform Judaism. Being Jewish and being completely involved in modern society are compatible. As society changes, Judaism must adapt to it.
How is Orthodox Judaism distinguishable from Reform Judaism? Torah is the standard of truth, and life within society must conform to it. Jewish life should change very little, for the Torah is unchanging.
What are the distinguishing characteristics of Conservative Judaism? Though it is not as traditional as Orthodox, it is still quite strict with laws regarding Kosher diets and Sabbath behavior.
According to the Mishnah, what sustains the world? The Torah, worship, and deeds of loving kindness.
What is the predominant form of daily worship in Judaism? Prayer
What are the two centers of Jewish worship? The home and the synagogue.
What does every synagogue contain? A scroll of the Torah.
When does the Sabbath occur? What are the two main aspects of its celebration? Sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Rest and worship.
What is celebrated on Rosh Hashanah? The Jewish New Year.
What is emphasized on Yom Kippur? Day of Atonement/repentance of sins.
What does the festival Passover commemorate? The Exodus story/freedom of the Jews from Egypt.
What is signified by the rite of passage that marks the birth of a child? The child is given a name and welcomed into the community.
What are the bar mitzvah and the bat mitzvah? Coming of age ceremonies.
What is a rabbi? A teacher.
What is the Kaddish? A prayer of mourning- the second stage of mourning.
Explain what a Kippah, Tallith, Tzizith, and Tefillin are. Kippah-head covering Tallith- prayer shawl Tzizith- tassel Tefillin- leather binding
What is a Mezuzah? Has the Shema in it: "Hear O Israel! The Lord is our God. The Lord Alone..." The most basic theological statement of Judaism, the Shema, is rolled up and contained in a Mezuzah, which is affixed to the doorposts of Jewish homes.
What is a Shofar? The ram's horn.
What is the yeshiva? Jewish school.
Briefly explain Kashrut. Dietary Kosher laws.
What is the Magen David? The star of David.
Briefly describe the Temple and its Memory, the Western Wall. The last remaining formation of the Second Temple. Sometimes the wailing wall.
