Organelle Vocab
| organelle | what it does |
|---|---|
| Cell membrane | Allows certain things to move in and out of the cell |
| Cytoplasm | Gellike mater inside the cell, holds the cell together (not in the nucleus) |
| Nucleus | (Largest organelle in animal cell) The structure that directs all the activities of the cel |
| Chromatin | Genetic blueprints – hereditary material (chemical that controls the activities of the cell (inside the nucleus)) |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) | Moves materials throughout the cell |
| Ribosomes | Makes protein |
| Protein | (Made of amino acids) used by the organism for growth and to replace and repair cells (made from chromosome) |
| Nucleolus | (inside nucleus) – Makes the ribosomes |
| Golgi Complex | Packages material (and moves proteins and other materials out of the cell |
| Mitochondrion | Energy is released by breaking down food molecules |
| Lysosome | Digests/breaks down waste and worn-out cell parts |
| Vacuole | Stores food, water, and waste |
| cell wall | Supports and protects the plant cell. |
| Chloroplasts | This is where light is changed into food (sugar) |
| Centrioles | They are involved in cell division (animals) (Note: All cells divide to make more cells, but only the animal cell has centrioles) |
| Prokaryote | Cell without a nucleus |
| Eukaryote | Cell with a nucleus |
