| Concealed T tile | grooved ceiling tiles that slide on to the grid tee, finished face project past the grid and hide the tee |
| Direct installation system | System where grid or support mounted directly above. ceiling tiles or gypsum board |
| edge molding | Trim used along the perimeter of a suspended ceiling |
| Angle molding | An L-shaped trim used along the perimeter of a suspended ceiling |
| concealed grid | Suspended acoustical ceiling system where the panels hide the grid from view |
| Cross tee | lightweight steel runner that acts as the secondary member of a suspended ceiling |
| dropped ceiling | ceiling plane installed lower than surrounding plane |
| I-beam | I-shape in cross-section extending equidistant from the central support |
| T-bar | bottom portion of the main beam or cross tee that forms a T-shape |
| Acoustical ceiling tile | Modular panels that aid in the absorption of sound |
| box beam | hollow beam that can be added to a ceiling to establish visual interest, hollow channel lightens the weight |
| ceiling | compound construction attach the finish materials to the structure above and may conceal wires and fixtures |
| cove lighting | Indirect lighting that is aimed upward and reflected back down to the room |
| cove | Alcoves in ceiling that eliminates 90 degree angle between planes. Used as decorative element or housing |
| exposed grid | Suspended acoustical ceiling system where users below can see the grid that supports the panels. |
| flush finish | meeting point of different materials abut at the same height. |
| furring channel | strip of metal fastened to the joist above to create a mounting frame for GWB ceilings |
| girder | beam accepts weight from above and acts as the main support |
| joist | Parallel pieces of lumber measuring 2" × 6" |
| main beam | lightweight steel runner as chief support for suspended ceiling anchored above |
| plenum | space between finished ceilings and slab above HVAC and electrical |
| recessed ceiling | Portion of ceiling plane installed at greater height than surrounding |
| shadow molding | W-shaped trim used along perimeter of a suspended ceiling, shadowed appearance |
| soffit | portion of the ceiling along the wall, that is lower height to establish hierarchy, create a flushed finish, or indicate separate spaces |
| square edge tile | Tiles featuring rectangular profile that rest on the grid tee, creating flush finish |
| suspended gypsum system | parallel steel channels supporting perpendicular furrings that hold the gypsum board ceiling and all components |
| suspended tile system | grid of parallel and perpendicular rails that are hung from the structure above to hold the ceiling tiles and all ceiling-mounted components |
| tegular tile | Notched ceiling tiles hang on the grid tee, finished face project past the grid, layered effect. |
| wire hanger | Wire used to secure ceiling systems |
