Judges

QuestionAnswer
What is the position of judges? They have power.
What are the types of judicial selection? Executive appointment, election, and merit selection.
What is the process for federal selection? The president nominates and the Senate confirms.
How does state selection work for executive appointments? Gubernatorial appointment: governor selects.
What are the types of state selection elections? Partisan v. Nonpartisan and legislative elections.
What is the merit selection/ Missouri plan? The way a judge is selected, through a commission forming a list, a governor selecting from the list, and voters deciding whether the judge should remain in office.
How is someone in the state judicial power removed by legislature? Impeachmetn and convction.
How is someone in the state judicial power recalled through election? Voters decided through referendum whether to remove judge.
What is a state judicial commission and what do they do? Commissions investigate and make recommendations.
What does the state supreme court determine? They determine what to do, public/private warning/censure, reprimand, and removal.
How can someone on the federal judicial be removed? They can be impeached by house of representatives, or through trial & conviction by senate.
What is recusal? A judge withdrawing from case due to lack of impartiality.
