| Organism | Living things |
| Habitat | An environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce |
| Biotic factor | The parts of a habitat that are or were once alive |
| Abiotic | The nonliving parts of an organism’s habitat |
| Species | A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring |
| Population | All the members of one species living in a particular area |
| Community | All the different populations that live together in an area |
| Ecosystem | Organisms that live in a particular area along with the nonliving environment |
| Ecology | The study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment |
| Producer | An organism that can make its own food |
| Population Density | The number of individuals in an area of a species size |
| Limiting factor | An environmental factor that causes a population to stop growing or decrease in size |
| Carrying capacity | The largest population that an area can support |
| Consumer | Obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| Carnivores | Consumers that eat only animals |
| Herbivores | Consumers that eat only plants |
| Omnivores | Consumers that eat both plants and animals |
| Food chain | Series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy and nutrients |
| Food web | Consists of many overlapping food chains |
| Energy pyramid | Shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another |
| Chlorophyll | Absorbs light |
| Autotroph | An organism that makes its own food |
| Heterotroph | An organism that has to get its food from a source |
| Niche | Includes how an organism obtains its food, the type of food the organism eats , and what other organisms eat it |
| Competition | The struggle between organisms to survive as they use the same limited resources |
| Predation | An interaction in which one organism kills another for food or nutrients |
| Symbiosis | Any relationship in which two species live closely together |
| Commensalism | A relationship in which one species benefits and the other species is neither helped nor harmed |
| Mutualism | A relationship in which both species benefit |
| Parasitism | A relationship that involves one organism living with, on, or inside another organism and harming it |
