Learners with Blindness

TermDefinition
Legally Blind Level of vision loss where a person's best corrected vision is 20/200 or worse or their visual field is limited.
Low Vision Reduced vision that can't be fully corrected with glasses, contacts, or surgery but someone will still have unstable vision.
Aqueous Humor Clear fluid in front part of eye that nourishes the eye and helps maintain pressure.
Cornea Clear, curved front surface of the eye that helps focus light.
Pupil Black opening in center of eye that allows light to enter.
Lens Clear structure behind the pupil that changes the shape to help focus light onto the retina,
Vitreous Humor Clear, jelly-like substance that fill the back part of eye and helps maintain its shape.
Iris Colored part of the eye that controls the size of pupil and amount of light entering,
Retina Layer at the back of eye that contains light sensitivity cells and sends visual signals to brain.
Optic Nerve Nerve that carries visual info from retina to brain.
Visual Acuity Sharpness of vision.
Snellen Chart Chart with rows of letters used to measure visual acuity.
Functional Vision Assessment Evaluation of how a person uses their vision daily in activities and environment.
Refraction Bending of light as it passes through eye to focus on retina.
Myopia Nearsighted, close objects are clear but distant objects appear blurry.
Hyperopia Farsighted, Distant objects are clear but blurry up close.
Astigmatism Blurred vision caused by an irregular shape of the cornea or lens.
Glaucoma Eye disease caused by pressure in eye that damages optic nerve.
Cataracts Condition where the lens of eye becomes cloudy so blurry vision.
Diabetic Retinopathy Eye disease caused by diabetes that damages the blood vessels in retina which can lead to blindness or blurry vision.
Retinopathy of Prematurity Eye condition that affects premature babies where blood vessels in retina grow abnormally and can damage vision.
Optic nerve hypoplasia Condition which carries visual info from eye to brain, can lead to visual problems.
Retinitis Pigmentosa Group of inherited eye disorders that cause progressive degeneration of retina and lead to gradual vision loss over time.
Tunnel Vision Where a person can only see objects directly in front of them while peripheral vision is reduced or lost.
Night Blindness Can't see in the dark.
Strabismus Condition in which the eyes are not properly aligned and point in different directions.
Nystagmus Condition where your eyes are rapidly moving such as up and down or side to side.
Orientation and Mobility Training that helps people with vision impairments move safely and independently.
