Ecosystems

| Organism | Living thing |
| Habitat | An environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow and reproduce |
| Biotic factor | Parts of habitat that are or were once alive |
| Abiotic factor | No living parts of an organisms habitat |
| Species | A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring |
| Population | All the members of one living species in a particular area |
| Community | All the different populations that live together in an area |
| Ecosystem | The community of organisms that lives in a particular area along with the non living environment |
| Ecology | The study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment |
| Niche | How an organism obtains it’s food, the type of food the organisms eat, and what other organisms eat it |
| Competition | The struggle between organisms to survive as they use the same limited resources |
| Predation | An interaction in which one organism kills another for food or nutrients |
| Symbiosis | Is any relationship in which two species live close together |
| Commensalism | Is a relationship in which one species benefits and the other species is neither helped nor harmed |
| Mutualism | Is a relationship in which both species benefit |
| Parasitism | Is a relationship that involved one organism living with, on, or inside another organism harming it |
| Producer | An organism that can make its own food |
| consumer | Obtain energy by feeding on other organisms |
| Decomposer | Break down biotic wastes and dead organisms |
| Food chain | Is a series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy |
| Food web | Consists of many overlapping food chains |
| Energy pyramid | Shows the amount of energy that moves from feeding one level to another in a food web |
| Photosynthesis | Is the set of chemical reactions plants use to turn light into water and nutrients into oxygen and energy |
| Chlorophyll | Absorbs light |
| Autotroph | An organism that makes its own food |
| Heterotroph | An organism that has to get its food from a source |
| Limiting factor | An environmental factor that causes a population to stop growing or to decrease in size |
| Density | The number of individuals in an area of specific size |
