QuestionAnswer
Energy Level Is the discrete amount of energy of an electron when it is in an atom
Excited state The excited state of an atom is one in which the electrons occupy higher energy levels than those available in the ground state
Ground state The ground state of an atom is one in which the electrons occupy the lowest available energy levels
Lyman series The set of lines created when an electron falls from a higher energy level to the n=1 energy level
Balmer series The set of lines created when an electron falls from a higher energy level to the n=2 energy level
Paschen series The set of lines created when an electron falls from a higher energy level to the n=13energy level
Photon A photon is a fixed amount of light energy or other forms of electromagnetic radiation
what did de Brogile propose ? He proposed that electrons may behave as waves as well as particles, similar to light= wave-particle duality
What did Schrödinger do? He came up with mathematical equations to work out the probability of finding an electron in an atom and he gave us the shapes of the four types of orbitals: s ,p, d and f
Heisenburg's Uncertainty Principle States that it is impossible to know both the position and velocity of an electron at the same time as electrons move in wave motion
Energy Sublevel Is a subdivision of an energy sub level. It is a group of orbitals within an atom, all of which have the same energy
Atomic Orbital Is a region in space around the nucleus of an atom where there is a high probability of finding an electron
Aufbau Principle electrons occupy the lowest available energy level
Hund's rule of Maximum Multiplicity when two or more orbitals of equal energy are available, electrons fill them singly before filling them in pairs
Pauli exclusion Principle no more than two electrons can occupy an orbital and this they can only do if they have opposite spin
Transition metal A transition metal is one that forms at least one ion with a partially filled d sublevel

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
