Ecosystems

TermDefinition
Biotic factors The parts of a habitat that are or were once alive
Organisms A living thing
Habitat An environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce
Abiotic Non living parts of an organism’s habitat
Species A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring
Population All members of one species living in a particular area
Community All the different populations that live in together in an area
Ecosystem The community of organisms that lives in a particular area, along with nonliving environment
Ecology The study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment
Population density The number of individuals in an area of a specific size
Limiting factor An environmental factor that causes a population to stop growing or to decrease in size
Carrying capacity The largest population that an area can support
Producer An organism that can make its own food
Consumer Obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
Decomposers Break down biotic wastes and dead organisms
Food chain A series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy and nutrients
Food web Many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem
Energy pyramid Shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another
Photosynthesis The set of chemical reactions plants use to turn light, water, and nutrients into oxygen and energy in the form of sugars
Chlorophyll Absorbs light
Autotroph An organism that makes its own food
Heterotroph An organism that has to get its food from a source
