Ecosystems

TermDefinition
Organism A living thing
Resources An organism gets food, water, shelters , and other things from its environment to live grow and reproduce.
Habitat An environment the provides the things a specific organism needs to live grow and reproduce.
Biotic factors Parts of a habitat that were once alive and interact with an organism
Abiotic factors Nonliving parts of an organisms habitat.
Species A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce
Population All the members of one species living in a particular area
Community All the different populations that live together in an area
Ecosystem A community of organisms that lives in a particular area along with the nonliving environment
Ecology The study of how organisms interact with each other and their environment
Population density The number of individuals in an area of a specific size
Limiting factor Environmental factor that causes a population to stop growing or to decrease in size, such as a fatal disease infecting organisms
Carrying capacity The largest population that an area can support
