Key Concepts

TermDefinition
Central Idea/ Main Idea The point, message, or argument an author wants to convey about a topic.
Details True confidential information.
Theme The subject matter of a conversation or discussion.
Claims State to be true or existing.
Evidence Knowledge on which to base belief or disbelief.
Explanation/Reasoning Thinking that is coherent and logical.
Tone The quality of something (an act or a piece of writing) that reveals the attitudes and presuppositions of the author.
Mood Inflections that express how the action or state is conceived by the speaker.
Conflict Opposition in a work of drama or fiction between characters or forces.
Text Organization/ Structure The manner of construction of something and the arrangement of its parts.
Point of View (POV) A way of regarding situations or topics etc.
Setting The context and environment in which something is set.
Characters An imaginary person represented in a work of fiction (play or film or story.)
Plot The story that is told as in a novel, play, movie, etc.
Author’s Intention/Purpose When the author wants to either persuade, inform or entertain the reader.
Passage A section of text; particularly a section of medium length.
Excerpt A passage selected from a larger work.
Prompt Something designed to elicit a response, especially a written response from a student.
Stanza A fixed number of lines of verse forming a unit of a poem.
Narrative Consisting of or characterized by the telling of a story.
Cause/ Effect What happened and what was the outcome.
Chronological Order The arrangement of events that happened in order of date.
