Evolution Unit Vocabulary

evolution the process by which a population changes over time
scientific theory a well-supported and widely accepted explanation of nature
diversity all the variety of life that exists on Earth; the variety of different inherited traits within a species
natural selection the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species
genetic variation the variety of different types of traits and genes in a species or population
trait a specific characteristic that an organism can pass to its offspring
adaptation an inherited trait that increases an organism's ability to survive and reproduce in its environment
vertebrate an animal that has a backbone
invertebrate an animal that does not have a backbone
homologous structures similar structures that related species have inherited from a common ancestor
fossils preserved remains or imprints of once-living organisms
where can fossils be found? amber, ice, and sedimentary rock
fossil record al the fossils ever discovered on Earth
endangered species species in danger of becoming extinct in the near future
extinction when all members of a species have died
environmental factors that can lead to extinction greater competition, new predators, loss of habitat, and natural disasters
