Evolution Unit Vocabulary

| evolution | the process by which a population changes over time |
| scientific theory | a well-supported and widely accepted explanation of nature |
| diversity | all the variety of life that exists on Earth; the variety of different inherited traits within a species |
| natural selection | the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species |
| genetic variation | the variety of different types of traits and genes in a species or population |
| trait | a specific characteristic that an organism can pass to its offspring |
| adaptation | an inherited trait that increases an organism's ability to survive and reproduce in its environment |
| vertebrate | an animal that has a backbone |
| invertebrate | an animal that does not have a backbone |
| homologous structures | similar structures that related species have inherited from a common ancestor |
| fossils | preserved remains or imprints of once-living organisms |
| where can fossils be found? | amber, ice, and sedimentary rock |
| fossil record | al the fossils ever discovered on Earth |
| endangered species | species in danger of becoming extinct in the near future |
| extinction | when all members of a species have died |
| environmental factors that can lead to extinction | greater competition, new predators, loss of habitat, and natural disasters |
