Chemistry Unit 9
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Counting | 1 dozen apples = 12 apples |
| Mass | 1 dozen apples= 2.0 kg apples |
| Volume | 1 dozen apples = 0.20 bushel apples |
| Dozen | 12 |
| Ream of paper | 500 sheets |
| Gross of pencils | 144 pencils = 1 dozen dozens |
| Mole | 6.02 x 1023 particles of that substance. representative particles = atoms, molecules or formula units. SI units for measuring the amount of a substance. Avogadro's Number |
| The Mass of a Mole of an Element | The atomic mass of an element expressed in grams is the Mass of 1 mole of the element. Always round to the tenths place |
| Molar mass | Mass of 1 mole |
| Moles-Mass | Use the molar mass of an element or compound to convert the grams of a substance and the moles of the substance. Mass (g) = moles x molar mass. Moles= mass (g)/molar mass |
| Percent Composition | Relative amounts of each element in a compound by mass |
| % mass of element | mass of the part/mass of whole x 100% |
| %mass | grams of element in compound/ molar mass of compound x 100% |
| Empirical Formula | Simplest ratio of elements, most reduced |
| Molecular Formula | Actual makeup of molecule, may be a multiple of the empirical formula |
| Structural Formula | Shows arrangement of atoms in chemical structure |
| Mass (g) | # Moles x molar mass |
| Moles | mass (g)/ molar mass |
