Ecosystem

Organism Living thing
Habitat An environment that provides the things specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce
Biotic factors Parts of a habitat that are or were once alive
Abiotic factors Non living parts of an organism’s habitat
Species A group of organisms that can mate with each other and produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce
Population All the members of one species living in a particular area
Community All the different populations that live together in an area
Ecosystem The community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with the nonliving environment
Ecology The study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment
Population density The number of individuals in an area of a specific size.
Limiting factor An environmental factor that causes a population to stop growing or to decrease in size.
Carrying capacity The largest population that an area can support.
Symbiosis Any relationship in which species live closely together
Commensalism A relationship in which one species benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed
Mutualism A relationship in which both species benefits
Parasitism A relationship that involves one organism living with, on, or inside another organism and harming it
Competition The struggle between organisms to survive as they use the same limited resources
Producer Make it’s own food
Consumer Obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
Carnivore Eat other animals
Scavenger A carnivore that feeds on the bodies of dead organisms
Herbivores Consumers that eat only plants
Omnivore Eat both plants and animals
Decomposer Break down biotic wastes and dead organisms
