| detention | n- the act of keeping someone in custody (ex. a political prisoner) "Chris' week-long detention will be after school." |
| fugitive | n- a person who has escaped or is in hiding to avoid arrest "The group was said to consist of deadly fugitives." |
| quarrels | n- arguments; disagreements "The men and their quarrels would last for hours on end." |
| Gestapo | n- secret police force of Nazi Germany, known for its brutality "The Gestapo and the Nazi Party were both politically aligned and led by one man: Adolf Hitler." |
| foreboding | n- sudden feeling that something bad is going to happen "I was foreboding that she would get caught next." |
| apprehension | n- fearful feeling about what will happen next "My apprehension levels were bursting through my body as the volleyball game continued." |

| legacy | n- what a person leaves behind that continues to influence others after their death "Marilyn Monroe's legacy still lives out to this day, and she is idolized by many young girls and women." |
| analyze | v- to look closely at the small parts of a text to see how they work together and affect the whole "In order to analyze the manuscript, we must work together." |
| background information | n- the (new) information that helps a reader better contextualize and understand a specific text "The author's use of background information helped my understanding of article deepen." |
| context | n- encompasses a text, its speakers, its audience, its purposes, and the circumstances that surround the text, including the time period and major historical cultural, or literary events may impact the context "The author didn't include a clear context." |
