TermDefinition
deportation n- the act of expelling someone from a country "The deportation system in the US is quite brutal."
detention n- the act of keeping someone in custody (ex. a political prisoner) "Chris' week-long detention will be after school."
fugitive n- a person who has escaped or is in hiding to avoid arrest "The group was said to consist of deadly fugitives."
quarrels n- arguments; disagreements "The men and their quarrels would last for hours on end."
Gestapo n- secret police force of Nazi Germany, known for its brutality "The Gestapo and the Nazi Party were both politically aligned and led by one man: Adolf Hitler."
foreboding n- sudden feeling that something bad is going to happen "I was foreboding that she would get caught next."
apprehension n- fearful feeling about what will happen next "My apprehension levels were bursting through my body as the volleyball game continued."
intuition n- ability to see the truth of something immediately without reasoning "My intuition told me he was the murderer- and I needed no justification."
mounting adj- increasing gradually; building up "My mounting stress is all due to the science test I have next week. "
rigid adj- stiff and unbending "The old woman was shockingly thin and rigid- it almost seemed as if a small gust of wind could nock her down."
insistent adj- demanding that something should happen "The young woman was truly insistent on getting her way."
devoted adj- showing strong commitment, loyalty, and dedication over a long period of time "The man was truly devoted to his wife, spoiling her and caring for her whenever he got the chance."
preserving v- protecting something important so it is not lost, damaged, or forgotten "Preserving the fresh smell of a new book is quite difficult when many people are using it."
resembled v- looked very similar to someone else "The young man resembled his father in many ways."
relic n- a treasured object kept because it has strong emotional or historical importance "The relic shimmered like honey in the afternoon sky."
humanity n- kindness, compassion, and belief in the goodness of people "The odd creation displayed zero signs of humanity- it was obvious that it was some type of robot."
legacy n- what a person leaves behind that continues to influence others after their death "Marilyn Monroe's legacy still lives out to this day, and she is idolized by many young girls and women."
analyze v- to look closely at the small parts of a text to see how they work together and affect the whole "In order to analyze the manuscript, we must work together."
background information n- the (new) information that helps a reader better contextualize and understand a specific text "The author's use of background information helped my understanding of article deepen."
context n- encompasses a text, its speakers, its audience, its purposes, and the circumstances that surround the text, including the time period and major historical cultural, or literary events may impact the context "The author didn't include a clear context."
Latin suffix -ent state of being; quality morpheme- president; the highest executive officer of a modern republic, as the chief executive of the United States
Latin suffix -tion act of morpheme- creation; the act of producing or causing to exist
Latin prefix co- together morpheme- commercial; a television or radio advertisement
Latin root -mit- to release; to send morpheme- permit; to allow to do something
