Deportation The act of expelling someone from a country. N Trump loves deportation because it reminds him of the power he holds.
Detention The act of keeping someone in custody. (ex. A political prisoner.) N Juvenile detention is a way to punish kids
Fugitive A person who has escaped or is in hiding to avoid arrest. N The fugitive hit the rode at dawn and only stopped walking at midnight.
Quarrels Arguments or Disagreements N The couple had quarrels daily but made up by noon.
Gestapo Secret Police in Nazi Germany, Known for being ruthless N The Gestapo sought out the couple.
Foreboding fearful apprehension; a feeling that something bad will happen. N He had a sense of foreboding about the science quiz
Apprehension anxiety or fear that something bad or unpleasant will happen. N He felt sick with apprehension.
Intuition the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning. N His intuition guided us all.
Mounting Increasing gradually, building up Adj He felt a mounting feeling of dread sensing the Gestapo would find them sooner than later.
Rigid Stiff and unbending Adj The statue was rigid almost as if it was carved to instill fear into the subjects' hearts
Insistent demanding that something should happen Adj. She was insistent on bringing Helga with her saying that one day Helga would lead the kingdom to glory.
Devoted Showing strong commitment, loyalty, and dedication over a long period of time. Adj. She was very devoted to the cause spending 100 percent of her time on it.
Preserving Protecting something important so it is not lost, damaged, or forgotten. V We preserved the scrolls knowing it would be of great importance later.
Resembled Looked very similar to someone else. V He resembled someone I knew leading to a very awkward apology about the way I spoke to him.
Relic A treasured object kept because it has strong emotional or historical importance. N The old sword was a relic, reminding people of the legacy he left behind.
Humanity Kindness, compassion, and belief in the goodness of people. N The first step of the extermination of humans was to hake away their humanity.
Legacy What a person leaves behind that continues to influence others after their death. N His legacy continues today providing education for kids who can't afford it.
Analyze to look closely at the small parts of a text to see how they work together and affect the whole. V She said we needed to analyze the text and search for words we didn't know.
Background Information the (new) information that helps a reader better contextualize and understand a specific text. N The background information helped him understand The throne of glass.
Context encompasses a text, its speakers, its audience, its purposes, and the circumstances that surround the text, including the time period, and major historical, cultural, or literary events may impact the context. N Without the context of the text he got lost in its complicated words.
