TermDefinition
Jurisdiction the territory, subject matter, or people over which a court may exercise lawful authority
Original Jurisdiction the lawful authority of a court to hear/act on a case from its beginning and pass judgement on the law and facts
Appellate Jurisdiction the lawful authority of a court to review a decision made by a lower court
Appeal a convicted defendant's request for a higher court to review the actions of a lower court
Dispute-resolution center an informal hearing place to meditate interpersonal disputes without resorting to a more formal arrangement
Community Courts lower courts focusing on quality-of-life crimes, emphasizing problem-solving rather than punishment
Problem-solving courts lower courts that focus on relatively minor offenses and handle special populations of address special issues such as reentry
Marbury v. Madison established Supreme Court's authority as final interpreter of the U.S. Constitution
Pretrial Detention defendants charged with serious crimes or thought likely to escape are held in jail until trial
Release on Recognizance pretrial release on the defendant's written promise to appear in court as required
Deposit Bail alternative form of cash bond letting the defendant post a percentage of the full bail with the court
Conditional Release imposes requirements on defendant and possibly supervision
Third-party Custody defendant is assigned to individual or organization promising to ensure their presence in court
Unsecured Bonds credit contact, no monetary deposit required
Danger Law a law to prevent the pretrial release of criminal defendants who may be a danger to the community
Grand Jury made of private citizens who hear the evidence of the prosecution to decide if there’s enough evidence for a trial
Arraignment the defendant’s first appearance in front of the court with the authority to conduct a trial
