Food Webs

Organism A living thing
Producer an organism that makes its own food
Consumer an organism that eats other organisms for food
Decomposer an organism that gets energy by feeding on dead materials and waste
Food chain A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Food web a system of interlocking food chains
Photosynthesis process by which producers use the energy in sunlight to create their own food
Population All of the same species in an area
carnivore A consumer that eats only other animals
omnivore An animal that eats both plants and animals
Herbivore A consumer that eats only plants
Keystone Species a species that an ecosystem depends on for balance
