LECTURE 2 INFO

QuestionAnswer
What is the order of envelope layers in order of importance? 1. a rain control layer 2. an air control layer 3. a vapour control layer 4. A thermal control layer
What statement was made in the "Perfect Wall' regarding rain control vs air control? If you cannot keep the rain out don't waste your time on the air. If you cannot keep the air out don't waste your time on the vapor.
Where does heat move? Hot to cold
Where does air move? High pressure to low pressure
Where does moisture move? Wet to dry
What is the first line of defense against water? Gravity
What is the fundamental principle of water management? Shed water by layering materials in such a way that water is directed downwards and outwards out of the building or away from the building
What is the key to the principles of water management? Drain the site, building, assembly, opening, component, material.
Where does water build up on buildings most commonly? Window sills, openings, doors, breaks in the continuous line of the envelope.
What are the other terms for water control layer? Drainage planes, waster resistant barrier, and flashing
Where is the water control layer located? Behind cladding on walls and below roof shingles or tiles.
Definition of Capillary Action Causes liquids to flow against gravity. Forces of cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension.
What does capillary action mean for buildings? Water will seep into porous material including masonry and move up and into the wall.
What are three type of material used for drainage planes on walls? House wrap (tyvek) Board (rigid foam) or liquid applied membrane.
What is sublimation? Melting into evaporation
What is deposition? Condensation into freezing
What are the reasons for airtightness? Prevent vapor penetration optimize insulation, indoor air quality, keeping condensation out, reducing heat loss from building envelope, preventing drafts and optimizing thermal comfort and sound insulation.
What are the two ways of preventing vapor penetration? Vapor diffusion and air transport moisture
What is vapor diffusion? Many streams of vapor coming at a structure and allow 1/4 quart of water.
What is air transport moisture? One small hole in structure allowing 30 quarts of water.
What is the best form of vapor control? Airtightness
